UPDATE ON RUNNING

5 Feb

It’s been 2 weeks since I first ran that 3 miler (ever so slowly) on the treadmill. I was pretty sore for 3 days- not the knee- but both my legs! I have since backed up and worked at .5 miles with out stopping- 2x, then .5 3x etc… Slowly building up my endurance. Today I did three miles- with only two stops – total time a little over 36 mins. I’m going to keep slowly progressing as far as possible toward “normal”. I’m feeling very optimistic. My immediate goals are to 1) not hurt myself, 2) do a 5k outside just so I can be part of an organized race again and 3) keep up with my cycling as it’s a whole lot less difficult on the knee joint. I am finally able to say unequivocally that I am glad I did this. 1 year 10 1/2 months post op….it’s definitely a marathon and not a sprint!

Out of curiosity, did your doctor approve running? I have tried to run a little since mine and am really sore for about a week after. At my last appointment, a few weeks ago, I asked about running and he said, “that ship has sailed”. Talk about discouraging!

Well – not exactly. At my last visit in Dec. he said that everything looked awesome on MRI and he thought any problems I had were muscular. At that point I did not consider it possible. My physical therapist thought it was fine so long as I eased into it…all along my doctor has said that if everything looked good and felt good then do it. Keep in mind he is a professional sports doc (who also sees regular people like me). So he might have a slightly different mind set. He did tell me from the beginning that I should readjust my sights from marathons to 10k…hang in there – no one know what your body will ultimately do but you. He recently told me that improvements in the cartilege continue over time. I truly think my improvement began with the cycling and was pushed forward by the targeted PT. Hope you continue to improve!

When I first started leg extension I would not go down or up all they way. This took quite sometime before I could do a full extension.
