UPDATE: 2 YEARS 5 MONTHS

4 Aug

Well, it’s August already! I can’t believe I am almost at the 2 1/2 year mark.  I am doing well.  My knee is still stiff a lot- especially going down stairs in heels – but not painful.  I run about 3 x per week.  3-4 miles per time.  I do most of my runs on the treadmill because it is soft.  I do run outside some, and it is getting easier.  I cycle or eliptical the rest of the time.  I am hopeful that I will continue to improve over the next year or more.  My doctor tells me it takes 5 years to fully mature the new cells (yikes!).  Cycling is pretty easy on it.  I intend to do another century ride this fall and can easily cycle 30 or 40 miles without any problems at all (no swelling or pain afterwards).  For example, I cycled 30 yesterday and the knee feels well enough that I may run 3 or 4 tonight.  Is it normal? No, but it sure is better than it was before surgery! I have a whole different perspective on things now and am so grateful that I have not been completely sidelined from sporting activities.  If you are at the beginning of this process – hang in there – it gets better!

I had my ACI in March and am cycling on a trainer between 25 and 40 miles a week. My longest is 15 miles although I was in Florida a month ago and did 20 miles. Since they cut me loose from PT a month ago I’ve been a slacker and definitely lost some quad strength and tone. That is my biggest frustration doing these “pud” strengthening exercises when I am use to going all out. The other frustration is that I live in the Ozarks where all the cycling is basically ascents and descents and I don’t have the strength to get out of the saddle and climb. I am headed to Cozumel in a few weeks where it is flat and plan on attempting a 40 mile ride around the island. Running is not even on the radar. What I wouldn’t do just to head out the door and just run a few miles.

You are doing awesome to be biking around so quickly. I was definitely not doing that well during my first 6 months. Good for you! What I learned is that progress is not as fast as I would like but it does come. It is now September – I am running 4 miles 3x per week – last week all my runs were outside. Cycling remains relatively easy – did a 50 miler three weeks ago – no problem. Will be doing a cenury mid October. good luck on your recovery.
