7 1/2 weeks post surgery

7 May

Well, I’m almost to eight weeks, at which point I am suppose to be able to bear 100 percent of my body weight on my knee. I have come to terms with the fact that I will not be walking once I get to eight weeks in a few days. But I am hopeful that I will be walking using one crutch this week and hopefully without any next week. I am starting to feel somewhat better and can get around better now. My knee is about twice the size of the other knee, but that is an improvement. This is a really LONG road. However, in the bright side, I have resumed my routine of doing push ups ( 4 sets of 30) and sit ups (4 sets of 50) a couple of times a week. I’m still lifting weights and the doctor said I could use te elliptical at 8 weeks. That should be interesting. I can’t wai to sweat again!

Thanks so much for posting your experiences pre and post ACI. My son has just had this procedure and he is a professional soccer player. I am making him read this because he is going through the same feelings. He has even gone so far as to request an MRI just to make sure there is nothing wrong because of the swelling. But now that I have read your description of your knee at 7 weeks, it does not seem unusual that he still has noticeable swelling.

It is really hard to keep things in perspective when your in the middle of it. I learned that young people who are athletic have the best outcomes- so hopefully your son will recover quicker than most. It’s a very emotionally difficult experience for a person like me who is not an athlete (but who loves to exercise) so it must be 10x as hard for your son. I continue to improve – I can run 5 miles pretty much without being sore and am seriously considering a half marathon in October.good luck to your son and if you have any questions- do not hesitate to ask. My recent discovery of Hoka One One sneakers has helped keep down the soreness after running.
